The building should be a landmark to announce the entrance of the new park and must accommodate park staff, pedestrians/bikers and boaters, providing them with information, shelter, restrooms and showers. Because it is on an island, the building must be completely self sufficient, filtering waste and generating its own power. Solution : This building is a figure/ground composition study. It consists of three gestural elements that formally reference historic industrial waterfront structures and project through a horizontal plane while having minimal perceived interaction with it. To further placate the marine nature of the site, it is built of arced timber (laminated) in the fashion of a wood boat hull. This construction method allows for a majority of the structure to be built and clad off site. The cladding is a main feature of the design. The triangular copper panels compose a dynamic rain screen. Some panels would be hinged along one side so they could open, exposing vents and windows and allowing the skin to adapt to the weather and sun. When it rains, water is funneled from the roof to a “wishing well” like reservoir at the center of the gathering space where it is then pumped to tanks located on the second stories of two of the towers so it can be used in the showers and toilets. This keeps the ground plan open and allows for natural water pressure to the fixtures. Water is heated by solar water heaters on the tilted roofs and stored above the boaters showers, which are active for three seasons. A major component of the facility, a large scale CNC router, was custom designed and built by the founders, a process which instilled a tremendous working knowledge of the tool and its capabilities. Specifically, this building should provide vertical transit to the various altitudes of its site and offer its occupants a place of refuge after a day of intense hiking. It should protect them from the dangers of the desert, enhance their wilderness experience and accommodate the storage and setup of tents. The program specifically required that the building be built entirely of standard sized lumber with exception of steel rod for cross bracing. Proposal : This structure functions in many capacities. It serves as a stair system connecting the lower valley and the upper plateau of the desert site. Visitors traveling through the structure experience the vertical nature of the canyon and experience a promenade of views unattainable from the ground. Tents are stored on the lowest level and can be pitched inside or on a number of rooftop patios. In this way, visitors are protected from animals and many spaces inside the building provide protection from direct sunlight and wind. Roof top edges are protected by floor setbacks and not guardrails to maintain the excitement of precarious cliff dwelling. The entire structure lightly inhabits and surrounds a natural concavity in the canyon wall and at night becomes the grandstand for a campfire ceremoniously lit within. The structural ethic of this proposal is one of complete material authenticity. It is entirely organized on a radiating, gradient pattern and adheres diagrammatically to a tri-part plan intended to encourage a cyclical routine experience. The wood structure of part 1 has been strategically replaced by a system of concrete piers supporting a sheet metal, homogeneous structural cladding enclosure, based on research that produced a viable Structural Skin according to the parameters of the project. The enclosure illustrated was generated with a Grasshopper Script in Rhino, which was designed to panelize a surface with folded components and adjust their size according to multi-directional gradient factors. For modeling and proof-of-concept, it automatically pulled 2d line-work from the 3d model, numbered the components and organized them into a layout for laser cutting. The idea that Wellness requires a recognition of the internal and external forces of decay on our bodies and a continuous attempt to mitigate the effects of those forces, became the driving theme for the project and led to the exploration of the concept of entropy, a process central to the formation of the universe and to the development of complex organisms. Proposal Development: A strategy employed to explore and express entropy was the gradient. While traditional architecture is typically designed from a regular grid, every aspect of the wellness center would be constrained to or generated by a gradient geometry. Based on the second part of the theme involving the continuous mitigation of bodily entropy, a cyclical process of learning and activity was central to the building’s plan. The program was broken into three parts; a learning space, a fitness space and an enjoyment space, all housed in separate buildings placed in that order around a circular courtyard. This was criticized as being merely a metaphorical representation of the idea but it was intended to physically facilitate a curriculum that would require a daily or weekly “wellness cycle” for students and staff. This 1/4 scale section model represents the intended “DNA” for the project. It was used as an experimental model and changed quite drastically over the course of its production. Bronze Extroversion     This is the third sculpture in a series of experimental systems carried out between 2010 and 2013. [Research Background] The pursuit of this research was to develop a methodology to create complex structural systems within a parametric framework and to develop a criteria for assessing and discussing their success. They each began with a simple intention and developed through their respective processes to be far more interesting than expected. The methodology refined by these studies mandated a practiced understanding of the material processes involved as well as a dependence on feed back from iteration. Parametric Theory, was not assumed to be inherently linked to digital algorithmic computation, but rather an exciting theoretical framework that has tremendous analog implications as well. It is believed that the current conflagration of computational systems has served to expose us to a world that was perhaps already inherent to us, one that can and should be pursued by a multitude of techniques and art forms. Each of these systems began with a vague intention. Then components and connection strategies were invented to best carry out the intention. As material and process realities affected the assembly of the systems, new limits and opportunities arose and were evaluated against the original intention, providing added authorship potential. Bronze Extroversion Intentions This Case Study began with the intention to develop a multi-layered, organic system from the principal of reflecting light indirectly from a multitude of individual light sources built into each part. It was conceived as a structural and aesthetic inversion of the previous two studies. Component To achieve indirect light, each component was designed to both hold a light source, in this case an LED, and to reflect the light. As with earlier bronze studies, each had to be shaped to transmit liquid metal as well as fuse to adjacent parts. The parts were cut from a flat sheet of wax. One half was punctured to hold a lamp and the other was shaped into a parabolic reflector. They were then folded so that the lamp socket pointed into the reflector. Aggregation/Mutation Strategy This is a system of similar parts with a variable connection strategy. However, the variable connection was only intended to have partial effect on the mutation of the final form. Based on experience from previous work with wax, it was apparent that the soft wax structure would deform most from imperfections and the effects of gravity during assembly. The wax parts were fused together leaving appendages that held air vents. Once cast, the filled air vents were removed and the same appendages served to hold wood spikes intended to insulate copper wires from the bronze. Finally, LEDs were inserted with one lead touching the bronze and one touching the outer copper wire grid creating a parallel circuit to power the lamps. Result During the casting process, an air bubble prevented the mold from filling entirely with bronze. The resulting piece was missing a third of its intended form. Despite some new emergent properties, the form exhibited more of a decayed effect than one of growth, as was originally intended. It was decided to rebuild the missing parts in wax, directly onto the bronze and re-cast the piece with aluminum. Aluminum has a much lower melting point than bronze, allowing it to fuse without destroying the original form. The lost wax process was repeated and the successful final piece retained its formal consistency while gaining a bimetallic finish. Perhaps the most interesting discovery occurred when the LED lamps were finally lit. As hoped, the shadows produced on adjacent surfaces were stunning and intricate. Bronze Expansion Intention To produce a layered, spherical system with a smooth exterior and a textured, structural interior. Components Similar to the first project, the individual components needed to embody both an exterior and interior reality. In this study, the components were created by fusing two separate parts, each with its own properties, in an effort to maximize their difference. The shapes to the right illustrate the diamond shape responsible for the exterior pattern and the structural connector designed for interior effect. Before fusion, the diamond was smoothed and rounded while the connector was folded and textured with a wire brush. Aggregation/Mutation Strategy This is a system of dissimilar parts with a constant connection strategy. Both the component parts and the connectors were drawn digitally, overlapped and arranged in a regular grid. The grid drawing was then mutated “photographically” with a Photoshop fish-eye filter to cause mutation. Interestingly, the actual effect this would have on the final assembly was unknown. The line drawing was printed twice and the paper sheets were embedded in two sheets of wax. The diamonds were then cut from one sheet and the connectors from the other. As the parts were compiled, they began to overlap like fish scales in an unforeseen but formally exciting turn of events. The weight of the wax caused even more distortion as the system slumped before reaching its final size. Result This case study pushed the parameters established by the previous study to the absolute limits. In fact, it pushed the process to failure. As it developed, this push, plus a number of other circumstances conspired to make it a tremendously exciting process. During construction in wax, gravity caused a nearly catastrophic distortion to the developing aggregation. Later, during the casting process, a combination of inadequate filling tubes and soupy molten bronze left one third of the mold cavity unfilled. The resulting bronze piece was subsequently missing a third of the material that had been carefully constructed in wax. Luckily, the entire structural armature was intact as were most of the more visible diamond scales. What emerged was a piece that had more variability and “organic” behavior than intended. The loss of material resulted in a decayed quality so it was decided to “re-grow” the missing parts with a deep amber colored resin. These were cast according to the original wax forms and fused to the metal with epoxy resin. The resulting finished form had an increased organic character because it was complete and the material variation had a quality of new growth. Gravitational effects, although nearly catastrophic to the wax structure, had deformed the system, causing a more interesting exaggerated gradient as the rows of diamonds progress from small to large. The most profound emergent property revealed itself after the piece was re-positioned several times in search of its most appropriate position for display. Weighing nearly 60 pounds, it balanced sturdily on just 3 points in its most precarious looking orientation. Bronze Introversion Intention By creating a strategically asymmetrical part, the aggregation of many would produce a form with structural complexity on the inside and a smooth regular diamond pattern on the outside. Components Aside from the intention to differentiate the inside from the outside, the most important factors that influenced the development of the part were structural stability and the necessity of transmitting molten bronze from one to the next without trapping air during casting. The shape to the right illustrates the final asymmetrical part that is half diamond, to produce an outside pattern and half structural connectors for the interior structure. Aggregation/Mutation Strategy This system is composed of dissimilar parts with a constant connection strategy. Each part was shaped so that, when cut from a wax sheet and folded, they could be fused to each other at three points to produce a rigid structure. To take advantage of the potential of this developing complex system and push the resulting form to extremes, the individual parts were adjusted before assembly to disrupt the potential uninteresting repetition of similar parts. As the parts were drawn digitally and organized into rows, each row was scaled to produce a size gradient from small to large and back to small. This strategy might have produced a rather expected form but, combined with the extreme variability and inconsistency of the wax to bronze process, the resulting system was very surprising. Result This piece was the first study in bronze so the process was unknown at the onset of production. Interestingly, it was also the most successful and predictable with the exception of the air venting tendrils. The shape of the parts, designed to easily fill with bronze and vent escaping air during casting, had to be modified during construction to provide additional air venting. The added vents were placed with care so that they might be saved in the final piece but it was predicted they would need to be removed. When the vents filled with bronze, the resulting appendages were so interesting that they were further sculpted to their final organic appearance. They were also able to precariously balance the entire weight of the piece, which produced a strangely levitated effect for an otherwise heavy object. When lit for photographs, it displayed another unintended quality as it produced intricate and complex shadow patterns on the ground surface. Star City Clock       The Star City Clock was inspired by the complex beauty of the natural world; a beauty defined by physical or genetic rules and formed from intricate systems of gracefully interconnected parts. It began life as the research project "Genetic Recursion" and was developed to its current state with Nathan Currier-Groh at Basermatter llc. Each are crafted from a sheet of resilient polypropylene plastic which is uniquely painted and laser-cut into twenty four parts. The parts are then folded along scored lines and interconnected with unique locking slots to produce the final form. It was sold both assembled and in kit form. Its creation proved the viability of a developing theory celebrating the potential of simple materials, brought to fruition through a holistic structural concept which locks all components together with minimal assumptions about the need for mechanical fasteners. The table was begun by gluing standard pine 2x4s into two major “butcher-block” chunks, compressed together with threaded rods traveling through aligned holes, across the grain. The chunks were then flattened and smoothed on the CNC router and legs were cut to fit into tapered holes left during the gluing process. Finally, the two finished top pieces and the legs were bolted together using the same threaded rods and aligned holes as were used for gluing, resulting in a total of just 9 fasteners used. The design reflected an initiative to produce products that celebrate their own materiality as well as the processes used to create them. The client was interested in a natural, almost rustic aesthetic which was leveraged into a bowl design that expressed the beauty of Walnut by allowing the CNC mill’s round tool to leave its mark in the direction of the grain. This yacht, produced by Searay Boats in 2006, represents the most comprehensive design developed by the team, who were responsible for providing a multitude of iterations for both the exterior and interior aesthetic as well as finalized drawings and models required for production. The images here illustrate Jeff’s personal contribution to the project which included hand drawn interior design concepts and the complete development of the digital 3D model, refined to engineering standards and used as the final surface model for the CNC cutting of the production fiberglass molds. Pallet 23     Pallet 23 is a multi-functioning entertainment and production facility in Cincinnati Ohio. Because of a focus on attracting high end, pop-up dinners and catered events, the kitchen became an important and highly visible part of the interior development. This kitchen island was co-developed by Modularem founder Jeff Welch and Nathan Currier-Groh at BaserMatter Llc to be both an energetic art piece as well as a functional cooking and dining surface. An important parameter in its development was a pre-existing stockpile of pre-cut walnut boards supplied by the client. These were utilized to achieve an intentional curtain like aesthetic, a theme derived from the video production and theatrical entertainment functions of the space. The diminishing gradient in panel size is both aesthetic and functional as it produces a dynamic repetition pattern and grows wider where it is responsible for supporting more of the solid surface. Not unexpectedly, the construction and joinery details are visible and finessed. For quick on-site assembly, many of the connections relied on simple wedges pushed through holes to lock the parts together and these became an important visual detail. Material Library       This is a comprehensive design proposal for a new Material Library at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design Art Architecture and Planning. This design was carried out professionally with the intention of revamping an unused space to offer students a rich material based education. The following is a series of excerpts from the design manual delivered at the end of the design process: "Material parameters are where design opportunity exists. A material’s inherent qualities should not be seen as limitations but as design parameters. Defaulting to a material’s traditional application reflects limitations of the mind, not of the matter around us. The known properties of materials offer endless design opportunity and we have only begun to unlock the numerous latent properties stored within the materials around us. Great designers summon the intrinsic parameters of materials to confront the limitations of the mind. The Material Library should express the unending potential of simple materials to perplex and amaze. Instead of just “showing” material samples, the library should help establish a lifelong comfort level with materials and the ability to unlock their potential. It should encourage a methodology for experimenting with and discovering the potential of materials. Great design advancements come from unlocking material potential, not assuming limitations. Storage System: Because there is ongoing development of the sourcing and organizational systems of a larger DAAP Material Library, the storage system has been designed to facilitate a wide range of ongoing development in the other areas. It is a fluid and adaptable system of organization, storage and display that can be reassembled infinitely to accommodate ongoing change and adaptation. The systemic aspect of the solution is all encompassing to the design. Essentially, it is a kit-of-parts system which, unlike any achieved in the past, will has many parts and a genetic, complex assembly strategy. Parametric Scripting is unnecessary to achieve a complex and organic whole if the parts themselves embody the variable and parameter functions of a digital script. It will be expandable, movable and dynamic. Although initially focused and tested in room 8220, the Library-as-System is not constrained to the space but will be able to slowly grow and populate the entire building. Similar to moss or lichen, it will have a distinct genetic identity and structure but it will grow and spread to wherever the nutrients are right. Literally speaking, the storage system will be able to attach to walls, sit on floors or hang from ceilings, all while maintaining the structural DNA that identifies it as the Material Library. It will populate DAAP according to individual department or faculty interest and their effort to sustain it (nutrients). Students have access to online data anywhere they are and this will be reflected in the disperse nature of the new library. It will not be a room destination but a database destination and system aesthetic that will tie the whole organism together. Space: The Library System and the functional space it inhabits are fully integrated. The current room is not contextual in any way and therefore the Material Library System defines the spatial experience. It is important to note that the Library System is a storage system that has the ability to create space according to its own parameters. It is not an infinitely variable formal surface that can also be storage. This Part-to-Whole design process defines the essence of the project’s place in the contemporary context. It is outdated to form organic blobs and then apply meaningless materials to them and the results are never as holistic and multi-functional as this storage solution. The DNA that defines the Library System will be dynamic enough to also define furniture and other elements. It is a concrete and steel kitchen island commissioned by Amazon inc. and installed in their MyHabit photo studio. Modularem collaborated with Amazon designers on the interior design of the break room and the island reflects the intended aesthetic theme developed in that process. The board-formed concrete and steel lend a warm permanence to the space through a careful expression of the wood used to form the slabs, highlighted through an innovative multi-step staining and sealing process. The casting process, carried out entirely by Modularem, is therefore inherently evident in the final form. Craftforce is a startup company based in Maysville KY offering an online social network designed specifically to link individual craftsmen with clients and projects. Within a year of conception, the company was featured on The Discovery Channel and the first of these signs was designed for filming. Its linear composition of 120 individually shaped aluminum plates spell out the brand through optical illusion as one moves past, in reference to the multitude of craftsmen that make the network thrive.
