As an Architecture student at the University of Cincinnati, DAAP, my projects relied heavily on the tools and expertise of the Rapid Prototyping Lab. I loved the atmosphere and supportive mission there and when a part position opened in 2015, I jumped at the opportunity to join the staff and begin my educational adventure, while still pursuing clients and projects for my business. Since then I have been instrumental in facilitating thousands of students design challenges and adapting the lab to ever changing technology and policy demands. One of my biggest efforts was the creation of a new kind of lab, the Student Technology Lab. We spun this lab off as a response to increasing demand for laser cutting and 3D printing, utilizing an emerging class of low cost high quality machines. The STL was built to allow students and faculty to quickly train and use the machines themselves, an experience that gives them both agency and mastery of the making process, ultimately informing their design goals. It has been a huge success and model for other labs. Some of the components of the project that I personally took on were tutorials, graphics and the design of lab fixtures to augment workflow. The most rewarding part has been the interactions I have with students, troubleshooting and teaching the ways of material processes, which is fundamental to good design.
